Not only can this be a baby monitor, but with an additional camera (or two...up to 4 total), it can be additional security. I currently have a camera pointed down my rather long driveway...and can monitor it via the little monitor it came with, my computer, or Skype. Very cool. And in addition, it displays the temperature of each camera as you're viewing it.As far as working as strictly a baby monitor, it performs very well - the 2 way audio, while not CD quality, is very easy to understand and is clear. The video is the same - it's not exactly black and white (except when its dark out), but the colors are mostly dithered so you can see what the colors are, but it doesn't try to saturate the image with deep colors as it would likely detract from the important part: you want to see what's going on with your kid with details (are they gnawing on the side of the crib like a rabid canine), and not the details of where they are (do you want to admire the cherry wood that... I love this monitor! It is so simple to use. I didn't need the directions to figure it out. The picture quality is very good. There is a slight lag during movement, but when objects aren't moving the picture is great. The side buttons are self-explanatory. There are four song choices. The intercom feature works while playing the song but not as well as without the music. I have not used the monitor with skype yet, but the directions make that ability seem awesome. You can monitor wirelessly from a remote location! The camera also has a night-light. The volume can be adjusted both from the camera base and the viewing screen. The camera can either be mounted to a surface with 2 small screws or left free standing. The power cord to the monitor is only 6 feet so you may need an extension cord.
