What makes it 'special' is, of course, the remote control that will completely shut off all but 2 of the outlets so nothing, not even stand-by power is consumed. This is good because it saves some energy and I suspect that the devices for which the power was completely shut down are better protected in the event of a spike. I liked this product when I first got it, it did what it said it would do and the remote worked from anywhere in my condo.However, 2 weeks in the remote would no longer send the signal to turn the unit off. I could manually turn it off and turn it back on with the remote, but that was it. However, since the power strip is placed in an area that's not easily accessible, the unit no longer served its purpose. We wanted a way to turn off the power drain when items were not in use. The remote capability of this unit seemed like just what we were looking for. The first one we bought initially seemed fine and so we bought the second one. When the second one arrived, the remote did not function at all. We did some trouble shooting and narrowed it down to the switch function just not happening. If the switch had made a good connection, everything would have worked. About that time, the first one's remote started behaving badly. The light on the switch was blinking as if a connection was constantly being made. Also, the switch started to feel a little spongy, like connections were not being firmly made.While the surge protectors themselves may be fine, we bought these for the advertised functionality of the remote switch.
