What is IPS?

IPS stands for in-plane switching. An IPS-LCD is a type of thin display that offers better viewing angles than TFT-LCDs. IPS-LCDs feature two transistors for each pixel, where TFT-LCDs use just one. This requires a more powerful backlight, which delivers more accurate colors, and allows the screen to be viewed from a wider angle. The downside is that an IPS-LCD may consume more power than a TFT-LCD.

IPS-LCDs typically are found on high-end cell phones and portable devices. Apple's iPhone and iPad both feature IPS-LCDs, so does nexus 7 tablet.

The Dragon Touch 9.7" tablet works well for what it is. It is not an iPad, so if that is what you are expecting, that is what you should be buying. I didn't want to pay $500 for a high end tablet so I gave this a chance. This tablet does everything that I expect it to and does it well. The only complaints that I have are:
1. The WiFi seems slow at times, like it is not connecting at full speed, or connecting and dropping and re-connecting. Sometimes web pages load right away and sometimes it takes a few moments.
2. The screen is not the best quality. It looks good from certain angles but not from others. Mind you that this doesn't effect the useability of the tablet. It is just that colors look different depending on what angle you are viewing from. Of course my other android device is a Samsung Galaxy S phone with an AMOLED screen that is supposed to be excellent.
The tablet comes completely rooted so there is no need to do that if you are into that sort of... Read more

Dragon touch 9.7 IPS Allwinner A10
Update 2/27/13 TabletExpress complete lack of concern for their customers continues by still selling the tablet as the MID970IPS. MID9716W is the new model and there is a firmware image available for it on TabletRoms.
UPDATE 2/14/2013: They are still listing this as the MID970IPS but in fact are shipping a different model with slightly different specs. The ROMS for the MID970IPS will not work on the new tablets but we have access to a new ROM on TabletRoms if anybody need one.
UPDATE 1/3/2013: There a currently two custom ROMS for the Dragon Touch 9.7 . Tabletroms is the first sight with a link. They fix pretty much all the bugs that are inherent in the stock firmware including Play working correctly.

I have had two of these for a couple months now putting it through it's paces before putting out a review. They retail at the $150-$170 mark. Normally I do a first impressions but one issue with the reseller made me hold back... Read more

I did a lot of research before I purchased this tablet. I knew I wanted a capacitive touch screen, dual camera, 1 Gb memory and flash support, and the 16 Gb storage was a bonus. I am not at all disappointed. I received the tablet in about 3 days, and it was obviously brand new. I have tried many of the advertised features, and so far I have had absolutely no problems. Google Play has all the free apps I need, so that's not an issue. Love the capacitive touch screen! The display is bright, the screen is big enough to easily read email and small print on internet sites, and the battery life seems okay. The owner's manual is fairly worthless (almost too small to read), but I hardly ever use those things, anyway.

My only complaint is with the keyboard case that was advertised to be used with this tablet. It is for a 10" tablet, and those are a different shape. The 9.7" is more square--not "wide screen"--so it is too tall to fit nicely into the case. The keyboard works... Read more
