Especially considering they use to compete with Dell in the "build your own computer" market. The first thing you will notice either from the pictures or if you see it in your local store, is the build quality. The screen is tightly constructed and even though it's glossy it doesn't show finger prints. The body itself is built 10x better than anything in this price range or even some of the higher end models that you will see at wal mart. It doesn't feel like cheap plastic, it's very firm and feels like the old days when computers could take a beating.As most know when you buy this you're buying an Acer, now that they own Gateway. So you'll see attributes of both. Most of the insides are Acer parts, and some of the outside. They have taken Gateways keyboard and made it much more flexible and the keys aren't quite as close together as they use to be. So it makes for a nice bouncy typing... With a 320gb hard drive, wifi, 2 gb RAM, and a 15.6 inch screen, it has plenty of power for my use. The LED screen is gorgeous. The battery seems to be good for 4 hours or so of internet/general use, though I expect it would discharge quicker if playing a video. It also has an SD card slot, 3 usb ports (all USB2), optical drive, ethernet port, and VGA and HDMI ports.As a Mac user, I was wondering about build quality, but it has not been an issue. It's not a state-of-the-art machine (as the price reflects), but it's a good solid workhorse. On Linux, it runs an office program, image editor, DTP program and illustration software with good speed and no memory issues. I purchased a Gateway desktop about 2 years ago, my first "Gateway" product since the late 90's, and my first Acer product. I have largely been happy with it, so I decided to give this laptop a whirl about a month ago, and I couldn't be happier with it thus far. It's a budget machine, but it performs very well. 2 gigs of RAM is about my only complaint with this machine, but for an extra $20 I ordered a 4 gig stick of DDR3 and still only wound up paying $350 for everything. Definitely worth it. |
